Have you ever found yourself suddenly pausing, reflecting, and asking, “Is this all there is?” Despite checking off every box society said would bring happiness, you're left wondering why fulfillment still feels elusive. You're not alone, and you're certainly not stuck. In fact, you're exactly where you need to be to start your journey toward rediscovering your midlife purpose and grow beyond feeling stuck.
If you've felt that your career, relationships, and hobbies no longer bring the joy they once did, keep reading. I'm going to share insights on why this feeling emerges in midlife, practical exercises for uncovering your new purpose, and my personal journey that could resonate with you deeply.
Why Midlife Feels Like a Turning Point
The sense of dissatisfaction or restlessness you're experiencing isn't a sign of failure; it's a powerful invitation to change and grow. Many of us spend the first half of our lives fulfilling roles expected by society, family, or peers. From building careers and raising children to maintaining relationships, we've often overlooked our own deeper desires.
We anticipate that our efforts will culminate in cinematic moments of recognition or gratitude, perhaps a heartfelt thank-you from your child, or that promotion you've worked tirelessly for. But life rarely offers these neatly scripted moments, and that's perfectly okay. Real fulfillment is subtler and requires an intentional journey inward.
Finding Your Why: The Heart of Purpose
Discovering your midlife purpose starts by identifying your “why.” Your “why” is your core motivation, the passion that drives your actions and keeps you inspired. It's a deeply personal calling, distinct from any external expectations.
Understanding your “why” isn't instant; it requires introspection and patience. But once discovered, it can lead to profound happiness and direction in life.
Practical Steps to Uncover Your Midlife Purpose
Finding your purpose involves actionable steps. Here's a structured approach that has helped me and many others reconnect with what truly excites us:
Step 1: Daily Journaling
Commit to journaling daily for 60 to 90 days. Reflect on your day's experiences, noting down:
- What values or principles really guided my decision today?
- What was I naturally good at today?
- What excited me today that I can’t stop talking about, or would love to learn more?
- What am I actually willing to do, to take action or make short-term sacrifices, to do more of what I did today, so that I can take further action later?
- How would I like to be remembered today?
Step 2: Seek Feedback from Others
Ask trusted friends and family, “What am I really good at?” or “What topics do I passionately discuss?” Look for meaningful insights, beyond superficial compliments. The answers that give you goosebumps point towards your core passions.
Step 3: Reflect on Childhood Experiences
Recall a vivid childhood memory where you felt truly alive or proud. Write down every detail. Identify common threads between these memories, your journaling, and feedback from loved ones.
My Personal Journey: Embracing Change and Growth
I want to share a part of my journey to inspire your own path. After an accident 22 years ago, I had to give up my passion for running. Initially, I felt robbed of something integral to my identity. However, I realized the importance of shifting my perspective. Instead of focusing on loss, I embraced this as a sign to discover a deeper purpose.
Through journaling and reflection, I noticed a recurring theme: helping others recognize and harness their unique talents. Today, my passion lies in empowering people to shed negative self-talk and embrace their authentic selves. Creating my YouTube and podcast shows allows me to reach and uplift countless individuals. Witnessing their transformations fuels my commitment every day.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset
Changing your mindset is crucial. Replace thoughts of being stuck or lost with affirmations of growth and possibility. Remember, your feelings of restlessness are invitations for transformation, not signs of stagnation.
Before you begin the practical exercises, pause for a moment. Take a deep breath and remind yourself: “I love you. You're doing the best you can. Feeling unsettled means you're ready for something new.” You're being called to grow, and embracing this truth is the first powerful step toward discovering your true purpose.
