What does it mean to Burn the Boats
In 1516 Hermán Cortés made history by destroying his boats when he and his Spaniard soldiers arrived in Mexico. His actions were a clear message to his men; they would win or die.
Today, the phrase describes when one begins embracing risks and separates oneself from their comfort zone.
Failure is the key to succeeding
Did you know success is a product of failure? I know this sounds like an oxymoron, so let me explain. To succeed, you need to accept failure as a learning process.
Thomas Edison and his associates worked on at least three thousand theories to develop an efficient incandescent lamp. After many failed attempts, and within two years, he patented The Edison Lamp.
Self-made Millionaire Barbara Corcoran was labeled a dumb kid because she couldn't read or write. Unbeknownst to Barbara or her parents, she had to work harder in school than the other children due to undiagnosed dyslexia.
Thomas Edison and Barbara Corcoran understood that you must embrace failure to succeed.
An easier way of understanding this concept is remembering when our parents, coach, or teachers would remind us that “practice makes perfect.” For you to succeed, you need to practice. We didn't always nail the best landing, pitch, or hit a home run; that's why we practiced.
Mindset Challenge
So, if we shift our mindset to accept failure as practicing succeeding, it removes the guilt associated with failing.
• Behave like you've achieved your goal or dream
• Develop a growth mindset
• Face your fears, knowing failing is not possible because you're simply practicing
• Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone
• Own your vision
Shifting your mindset is the key to leaving your comfort zone.
